This micro-credential builds a foundational understanding of the sexual assault examination process, trauma-informed patient care, forensic evidence collection, and the role of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Developed by UCO’s Forensic Science Institute and School of Nursing, in partnership with SANE-certified nurses at YWCA Oklahoma City, this micro-credential prepares the practitioner to properly collect and store forensic evidence for future testing.

Throughout the course, you will explore the medical, emotional, and forensic considerations involved in caring for patients following sexual assault.

You will also observe a simulated SANE examination demonstrating how nurses and advocates communicate with the patient, gather relevant information, collect and document evidence, discuss treatment options, and prepare for follow-up care.

This course is intended as an introduction and professional-learning resource. It does not replace formal SANE education, supervised clinical training, certification requirements, or the policies and protocols used by your healthcare organization.

This learning experience is 100% online and self-paced. It consists of:

  • 4 content modules
  • A detailed, simulated SANE examination video.
  • Final exam
  • Downloadable resources for on-the-job support
  • Micro-credential digital badge (contingent upon passing course)

The course may be completed at your own pace, but is estimated to take 1-2 weeks if accessing regularly.

Forensic Evidence Collection for Nurses was developed through collaboration among organizations committed to healthcare education, forensic practice, victim advocacy, and community support.

Each partner brings a different area of expertise to the course, helping connect compassionate patient care with forensic knowledge, professional education, and survivor services.

  • The University of Central Oklahoma is proud to partner with YWCA Oklahoma City. YWCA SANE-certified nurses graciously volunteered to be filmed in a mock SANE exam, and this project would not have been possible without their time and essential knowledge.
  • UCO's Forensic Science Institute provided key resources and knowledge regarding DNA and evidence processing, and were instrumental to the success of this course.
  • UCO's School of Nursing closely monitored the development of the course and lent their pedagogical expertise to the creation of content and assessment.
This course is intended to build confidence for nurses in supporting patients who have experienced sexual assault. This training can be taken to bridge the gap for nurses who are uninterested in pursuing a SANE certification, or used as an introductory course for those who intend to become SANE-certified in the future.
